Blackheads Vs. Whiteheads: How Are They Different?

Both blackheads and whiteheads are clogged pores. But the opening of the pore is different in each.

In a blackhead part of the pore, the surface of the skin is stretched open. The black color is dead skin cells, bacteria and oil stuck down in the pore because the top part of the pore is open. The scientific term for a blackhead is an open comedone.

A whitehead is also a clogged pore except unlike a blackhead the top of the pore is not stretched open and exposing the clogged portion. The pore is still clogged but the surface of the pore is closed. So dermatologists call these closed comedones.

Blackhead removal tools are the best way to treat blackheads and sometimes whiteheads without scarring. Not all are the same though the better kits will last for lifetime, while the cheap kits will cut you and spread bacteria.

Do Blackheads Cause Whiteheads?

When dead cells, bacteria, or oil clog the pores of your skin cells, blackheads and whiteheads occur. The open forms of blocked pores lead to blackheads. And, the closed forms of blocked pores cause whiteheads.

Common Differences Between Blackheads and Whiteheads

Blackheads

Whiteheads

Oxidation of clogged buildup makes their color darker.

Yellow or white in color.

Type of non-inflammatory acne.

Are non-active acne.

Occur in an open pore.

Closes the opening of a pore.

Blackheads can be removed with pore stripes.

Whiteheads cannot be removed with pore stripes.

How to Treat Blackheads and Whiteheads:

Basically we want to reduce the accumulation of oil and keratin in the hair follicle opening. So you can use a chemical exfoliant. You can use creams and gels that contain salicylic acid. Salicylic acid tends to concentrate in areas where there are oil forming glands. So it is very lipophilic. When it concentrates in these areas it tends to shed the dead skin and let the oil come out smoothly. So this leads to reduction in the formation of blackheads and whiteheads.

Home Remedies:

You can follow some home remedies for blackheads. Do not use any kind of lemon. Any kind of harsh scrubs on your face in order to remove these lesions can do more harm than good. When you try to forcefully extract these lesions, it can leave behind a really nasty black mark and sometimes also lead to scarring. So you want to be very gentle with removal even if you want to attempt it at home.

Salicylic Acid Face Wash

First of all, wash your face with a salicylic acid face wash.

Leave it on for about 2 minutes.

Then wash it off. Take steam for about 5 to 10 minutes. With a comedone extractor, you can  gently remove blackheads.

* remember don't apply too much force. Just push the contents under the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of lukewarm water. Apply it directly to the affected area of your skin. Leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse well.

Use this apple cider vinegar wash every time you wash your face.
